Una National Park: Bosnia and Herzegovina’s hidden gem

The Una River is one of the most beautiful rivers in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well beyond. Una National Park is one of the four national parks of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The national park is located in the extreme northwestern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the Bihać municipality and Una-Sana Canton area. It was declared a national park in 2008.

It covers the area of the canyon part of the upper course of the Una river, then the area of the canyon part of the lower course of the Unac river, the intermediate space between these two rivers, and the orographic slopes of Plješevica, Grmeč, and Osječenica mountains.

The total area of the national park is 19,800 hectares.

The area of the National Park represents a unique natural entity in this part of Europe. It is very valuable for the preservation of the overall landscape and biological diversity.

Una river, the greatest natural asset after which the National Park got its name, springs in the village of Donja Suvaja below the Stražbenica mountain in Croatia. Unac springs as a mill stream, under the Šator mountain at 876 m above sea level. Krka is a 5 km long river as a border river with Croatia. Its entire course flows through the National Park.

There is great biodiversity. The fauna and flora of the Una National Park are diverse in all their characteristics in this part of Europe. Many plants and animals have found their home in the National Park.

In the cultural and historical sense, the area of the park is also an area that abounds with a rich heritage of archaeological sites and historical monuments, and the special position of this area on the transit route towards the sea brought it under the influence of many cultures in the past, from where rich archaeological sites, the remains of medieval fortifications and sacral objects of different religions and cultures.
