Perućica is one of the last preserved rainforests in Europe. It is located within the Sutjeska National Park, in the municipality of Foča, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
A rainforest is a forest that has developed since its inception with little (secondary rainforest) or no human influence (primary rainforest), i.e. it was created by the action of nature.
Perućica rainforest is located in the Sutjeska National Park, between the mountains Maglić, Volujak, and the river Sutjeska.
It is about 20,000 years old, and in 1952 it was declared an area of special natural importance, only to be declared a nature reserve under strict state protection just two years later. With its 1300 ha, it represents a huge expanse, and in some parts, it is very inaccessible.
It is full of beautiful untouched natural scenes, and one of them is Skakavac, a waterfall located in the heart of the rainforest over 70 meters high.
The human hand has never had an impact on the birth-life-death cycle of plants and animals in this rainforest. It contains a large number of trees that are around 300 years old. Trees over 50 meters high can be found here. So far, over 170 species of trees and shrubs, and over 1000 species of herbaceous plants, many of which are endemic, have been registered.
Given that the forest is very dense, in some parts even impassable, and protected, the visit is allowed only with an announcement and accompanied by a guide from the Sutjeska National Park.
